VARNA LIBRARY

PUBLIC / VARNA / PROJECT 2015

IMAGINATRIUM Reading is an act of isolation from the real world and a voyage to an imaginary one. A library is a container of imaginary worlds and must be a space of isolation. So we created a closed reading space turned on itself. In the center, a circle atrium is formed and in its heart a new life is planed -evergreen oak (quercus ilex). But the reading voyage is also a transmission of ideas and a relation of worlds. So a library cannot be completely cut from the outside. The connection between the in-space and the out-space must be fluid and permanent. So in our building, the transmission movement is gradual and the facade cover is translucent – no view just light. In urban aspect, our project creates an intermediate scale between the high concrete volume of the municipality and the smaller surrounding buildings. In order to realize this scale connection, the volume is defragmented.
